Adoption ceremony to be held November 9 in Helena

Five families will finalize adoptions

The annual Helena ‘Celebrate Adoption’ ceremony is slated for Monday, November 9, 2015 at 2 p.m. at the Capitol’s Old Supreme Court Chamber, Room 303.

The event is part of National Adoption Awareness Month and is co-sponsored by the Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS), Catholic Social Services and other area licensed child-placing agencies.

Additional adoption ceremonies will be held in November in Billings, Bozeman, Great Falls and Missoula.

In Helena, a total of five families will officially finalize their adoptions for seven children.

“Every child deserves a loving family,” said Governor Steve Bullock. “Today, that promise becomes a reality for seven more children. Congratulations to the new parents!"

The Honorable Mike Menahan, District Court Judge, with help from Sylvester and Tweety Bird, will be on hand to preside over the ceremony.

Montana foster parent John Joyce of Helena will also be honored. Joyce was recently named an Angel in Adoption through the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute. It honors individuals, couples, and organizations that have made extraordinary contributions on behalf of children in need of families.

In state fiscal year 2015, the DPHHS Child and Family Services Division (CFSD) finalized 259 adoptions, including 1,000 over the past five years.

CFSD administrator Sarah Corbally said the state is always looking for more parents to adopt, and also needs more foster parents. Currently, a near record number of children are in Montana’s foster care system – nearly 2,800.

“I encourage anyone who might be interested in adoption or becoming a foster parent, to contact our agency to learn more,” she said. “Together, we can make a difference.”
