DPHHS annual employee fundraiser to benefit the Friendship Center nets $8300
Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) employees will deliver to the Friendship Center in Helena on Tuesday, December 20 a check for $8300, in addition to 30 boxes of food and other personal care items.
The donation is from the state agency’s annual holiday fundraiser with all proceeds benefitting the local shelter. DPHHS began the fundraiser 24 years ago.
The monetary donation, plus 100’s of donated items brings the total donation value to about $9300. The donated items include bed sheets, pillows, dishes, food, laundry supplies, bath towels, and various personal care items.
Friendship Center Executive Director Melinda Reed said the monetary donation is especially meaningful this year after losing a major federal grant. “We are seeing an increasing need for emergency services, particularly emergency shelter, and this donation will make a significant difference for us,” she said.
DPHHS staff hold craft and bake sales, 50/50 drawings, and silent auctions at three DPHHS office locations throughout Helena in November and December. Donation boxes are also set up at various Helena office locations as well. The event is coordinated by 25 agency staff.
This year, there were 72 local businesses who donated items to the effort as well.
The Friendship Center is the only shelter in Lewis and Clark, Jefferson and Broadwater Counties that provides a safe haven and a broad range of support services at no charge for anyone who has suffered domestic violence and sexual abuse. http://thefriendshipcenter.org/what-is-the-friendship-center/
