Disability Determination Services

The Montana Disability Determination Services (DDS) handles the medical eligibility for Social Security Disability claims.  These determinations are based on federal rules and regulations. All applications for benefits must be submitted through the Social Security Administration (SSA).

The Application Process

There are several ways to apply for benefits:

After you have applied and meet the initial criteria, your claim will be sent to the state DDS to make a medical determination. The DDS is under the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) and you may receive mail or calls from DPHHS.  The DDS will contact your medical providers for records. You may be contacted by mail or phone for additional questions. You may be asked to attend a medical examination, at our expense, if the records we receive are not sufficient for us to make a determination. SSA contacts you with the final results after the DDS makes the medical determination for benefits. SSA also handles any questions regarding benefits paid.

For more information about disability criteria, you may go to SSA’s website at http://www.ssa.gov/dibplan/dqualify4.htm.
