Creating Asthma Friendly Schools- Teacher Training: Access & Details

The Creating Asthma Friendly Schools training is a 1-2 hour self-paced course available to all Montana teachers and coaches. The course is now housed within the Teacher Learning Hub on the Montana Office of Public Instruction website. To access the course visit OPI's Teacher Learning Hub.

One OPI renewal unit will be awarded upon the successful completion of this course. If you have any questions regarding the training, please contact William Biskupiak at wbiskupiak@mt.gov.

Allergy and Anaphylaxis Training: Access & Details

This training was developed by the Allergy Community Experts Network and the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services. The training reviews the causes of anaphylaxis, early recognition of signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis, indications for administering epinephrine, instructions on how to administer epinephrine, and the proper protocol to follow in the case of an anaphylaxis emergency. The training takes roughly 1 hour to complete and participants earn 1 OPI renewal unit. Participants will begin the training by taking a pre-test. Upon completion of the pre-test, participants will be taken to the training video and reading components of the training. The training can be accessed here, Allergies and Anaphylaxis Training for School Staff. Upon completing the training, an OPI renewal unit certificate will be sent to the email and address indicated by the training participant.

Creating Asthma Friendly Schools- Coach Training: Access & Details

In order to complete the training, please first watch Asthma in Montana: Student Stories (please note that this is a large file and may take some time to load), a 5-minute presentation.

After that, complete the pre-test (about 10 minutes). You will be led to a page where you can read through the following 7 documents: “Student Asthma Action Plan,” "Protocol for Responding to an Asthma Episode,” “Reducing Asthma Triggers in the School Setting,” “Assisting Students with Exercise-Induced Asthma,” “Outdoor Sporting Events,” “Proper Use of Inhalers and Spacers,” and the Montana Code Annotated 20-5-420. This should take about 15-20 minutes.

Next, you will watch the “Exercise-Induced Asthma” video presentation (20 minutes) and complete the post-test (15-20 minutes). Please note that the presentation is a large file and may take some time to load.

Note: We recommend that you complete the training in one sitting. You will be unable to review your answers once you have submitted them; the program lets you go back, but does not save your answers such that you can view what you entered.

After successfully completing the post-test, an OPI renewal unit certificate will be sent to you. One OPI renewal unit will be awarded upon the successful completion of this course. In addition to the certificate of credit earned, we will send to you a hard copy of “Winning With Asthma” along with a Coach’s Clipboard, which has a protocol for responding to an athlete’s asthma attack printed on the back. Successful completion may require you to re-take the post-test, in the event that you have more than 5 incorrect answers, or if your short answer or short-essay questions require clarity. In order to reduce the chances of having to re-take the test, please answer the questions carefully and fully the first time. If you have any questions regarding the training, please contact the Montana Asthma control program at asthmainfo@mt.gov.
