The Montana Statewide Independent Living Council (SILC)
The Statewide Independent Living Council advocates for the independent living needs of people with disabilities so that they can enjoy the same rights and opportunities as all Montana citizens.
It does this by developing and following the guidelines of a State Plan, which contains the policies and recommendations for independent living.
Most SILC members are people with disabilities, and additional representatives include: a Tribal Vocational Rehabilitation director, a Center for Independent Living director, a representative from Disability Employment and Transitions, a youth representative and a representative from other state agencies that provide services for individuals with disabilities.
The SILC partners with the State Rehabilitation Council and Centers for Independent Living to advocate, expand disability services, provide disability education and assist in the development of future disability leaders through programs like the Montana Youth Leadership Forum (MYLF).
One of the SILC's main priorities is to improve transportation in Montana. To fulfill this objective, it works with the statewide transportation coordinator on various initiatives. The coordinator works with the IL Transportation Task Force on projects including planning transportation summits, presenting at Independent Living Symposiums and increasing the viability of transportation through the passage of laws such as HB213, which allows the operation of electric vehicles by persons with disabilities.
All regularly scheduled SILC meetings are open to the public. If you want to provide input for the development of the SPIL, learn more about the council or to find out how to become a representative, please contact:
