Strength from the Start: Montana Celebrates the Life-Changing Impact of National Home Visiting Week
HELENA, MT – Today, leaders and advocates are kicking off the Second Annual National Home Visiting Week (April 20-24), a celebration of the dedicated professionals who walk alongside families to build a foundation for lifelong success.
State officials say that home visiting is more than a service—it is a partnership. These programs connect expectant parents and families of young children with trained support professionals who provide personalized coaching right in the home. By utilizing evidence-based models, these "navigators" help ensure healthy births, boost family self-sufficiency, and prepare Montana’s youngest learners to thrive from day one.
“Home visiting is a catalyst for resilience,” said Leslie Lee, Supervisor for Healthy Montana Families. “By meeting families where they are, our home visitors provide the tools and confidence parents need to raise healthy, happy children. This week is about honoring the tireless dedication of these professionals who are making our communities stronger, one visit at a time.”
The reach of these programs is expanding across both the nation and Montana. In 2025, more than 284,000 families across all 50 states participated in home visiting. Locally, Healthy Montana Families (HMF) served 948 families last year through 18 programs across 16 counties. Families typically engage in bi-weekly visits focused on developmental milestones, health, and parental well-being.
The true value of the program is found in the individual victories of Montana mothers and fathers. The Dawson County Health Department Home Visiting program shared a recent success story that highlights the program's holistic approach.
“One of our clients, a mother in her early 30s, recently achieved a life-changing milestone by securing her first-ever job,” said Renee Steinbron, Parents as Teachers supervisor for Dawson County. “Through our partnership, she didn't just find employment; she gained the independence and social confidence to truly thrive. Watching her personal and professional growth has been remarkable.”
In honor of the week, Governor Greg Gianforte has issued an official state proclamation designating April 20-24, 2026, as Home Visiting Week in Montana (PDF), urging all citizens to recognize the vital role these services play in the health of our future generations.
