Montana's Newborn Screening Programs

The goal of the Newborn Screening Program is to assure every baby born in Montana will receive three essential newborn screenings. Most babies are born healthy. Montana tests all babies because a few babies look healthy but have rare health conditions. It is very important that these conditions are detected right away.

Midwife Reporting Support

The State of Montana requires all Midwives with state issued screening devices to report screening results either in HiTrack or by fax on a quarterly basis, at minimum. Below are some reporting resources for you to utilize

  • To request access, training, or support for our data collection system, HiTrack, please fill out a HiTrack Request Form.
  • If you are not reporting in HiTrack, please fax all screening results to 406-449-0030 using your own data list or a completed Midwife Screening Data Reporting Form.

Midwife Handout Re-Stock Request and Screening Referral Resources

Midwives are required to educate parents on newborn screening information and provide any referral information necessary pursuant to the Montana Administrative Rules for Out of Hospital Births. Administrative Rules of Montana (mt.gov)

Midwife Equipment Support Request

Please note, all equipment support requests will be reviewed twice annually. Support will be awarded based on availability of state funds and requests with the highest impact for Montana families.
