The Epidemiology and Scientific Support Bureau (ESSB) maintains and distributes public health data from the following systems:


These data systems contain information on a wide variety of health issues to support Public Health programs in Montana. ESSB's main purpose is to provide the most accurate and timely data possible to the Public Health and Safety Division Programs, the Department of Public Health and Human Services, local health agencies, policy makers, and community groups while protecting the personal health information that is contained in such data.

Interactive Dashboards with Public Health Data

Community Health Insights contains public health indicator data for counties from a range of data sources including MIDIS, Vital Statistics, BRFSS, the Tumor Registry, Hospital Discharge, and the United States Census Bureau

Injury and Overdose Indicators Dashboard has county and statewide data on both fatal and non-fatal injuries and overdoses in Montana by age and sex.

Montana EMS Dashboard provides daily-refreshed data on emergency medical services calls in Montana.

Montana Trauma Registry Dashboard has data on severely injured patients treated in participating Montana hospitals and provides a snapshot of the trauma system in Montana.

Violent Death Reporting System Dashboard has data on violent deaths occurring in Montana including all homicides, suicides, undetermined intent, deaths due to legal intervention, and unintentional firearm deaths.

Montana Poison Center Data contains data from the Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Safety call center and gives annual statistics on both human and animal exposures that the call center responded to.

Montana State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System contains detailed data on unintentional and undetermined intent overdose deaths in Montana

Montana Timely Overdose Data Dashboard contains more timely data on overdoses from hospital emergency departments, emergency medical services, poison control centers, law enforcement drug seizures, and provisional death certificates. Some data sources are updated daily while others are updated monthly.

Data Visualization - Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) contains data on fatal motor vehicle traffic crashes maintained by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Montana State Cancer Profiles contains cancer incidence, mortality, and risk factor data for Montana maintained by the National Cancer Institute.

Stroke Story Map contains data on stroke care in Montana and information on stroke symptoms and what to do if you or a loved one might be having a stroke.

Montana Diabetes Program Story Map Collection has story maps about diabetes prevention, healthcare provider resources, and diabetes self-management resources.

Occupational Health and Safety Dashboards contains data on health outcomes and risk factors by industry, workers’ compensation claims, and other occupational health data.

COVID-19, Influenza, and RSV contains data on the incidence, hospitalizations, and deaths for COVID-19, Influenza, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).

Measles Cases and Outbreaks is updated weekly and includes information about measles cases and outbreaks at the county level.

Outbreaks Dashboard contains data on outbreaks of any condition reported in Montana

Montana Tick Surveillance Dashboard contains data on tick species that are likely to spread disease and where they have been found in Montana.

Sleep-Related Infant Mortality and Safe Sleep Dashboard contains statistics on sudden, unexpected infant deaths that occurred during a sleep period or in a sleep environment. It also has information on preventing sleep-related infant deaths.

PRAMS Indicator Dashboard contains data from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) which collects data from newly postpartum parents and asks about many different risk and outcomes throughout the pregnancy and birth.

Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative Facilities gives information on birthing hospitals that are working on or achieved Baby-Friendly Hospital Designation for excellent breastfeeding promotion and support.

Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services Interactive Dashboards Gallery contains dashboards from many other data systems managed by DPHHS but outside of public health, including Child Welfare Caseload, Medicaid, Public Assistance, and Child Care Capacity.

Montana Data Portal contains data on labor, population, and administrative data from the state of Montana.
