Fluoride Applications in Primary Care

Initiating preventive dental care at an early age in primary medical settings may offer an opportunity to prevent dental decay.  Montana Medicaid reimburses physicians, physician assistants and advance practice nurses for applying topical fluoride varnish.  Training for fluoride application can be found at the Smiles for Life website.

Conducting a caries risk assessment allows providers a standardized way to document risk for dental disease.  The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in collaboration with Bright Futures and National Interprofessional Initiative on Oral Health developed an assessment tool.
